Katharinas Friidrottsskola 2001 - Katharina's Summer Athletics Academy 2011

Last week Katharina went to a Summer Athletics Academy and she had so much fun. Clearly she has a talent for this as one can see from the pictures below and that is really nice.

Topploppet 2011 - Milestone 1

Milestone 2: Från augusti springa 7 km 2 ggr/vecka (tis/fre)
Milestone 3: Från september springa 9 km 1 gång/vecka, 7 km 1 gång
Milestone 4: 1-2 veckor före loppet springa 11 km 1 gång/vecka

Loppet går den 1 oktober. Fortsättning följer.

Gerry Rafferty - RIP
Dessförinnan hade Rafferty framgångar med egna gruppen Stealers Wheel, bland annat med singeln ”Stuck in the middle with you”.

---

Way down the street there's a lad in his place
He opens the door he's got that look on his face
And he asks you where you've been
You tell him who you've seen
And you talk about anything

He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down there's a quiet little town
And forget about everything

Lara Croft - will she ever die?
The 9th (!) game in the series about Lara Croft is under development and is to be released soon. Since the first Tomb Raider game in 1997 millions of players have enjoyed her adventures, deaths, and almost cancelled series (after TB5). But now she lives on in yet another chapter. I don't have the time to play the game these days but still follow the news and collect the games, just in case I'll find the time in the future. If you didn't try out Tomb Raider yourself until now it's about time to do just that. :)

Microsoft Touch Mouse Will Bring Easy Multitouch to PCs
Well, it's taken quite a while, but finally, Microsoft will release its Touch Mouse, their variant of Apple's Magic Mouse. As many Mac users have noticed over the last 14 months, the Magic Mouse is not without its faults. It begs the question: will Microsoft's PC Touch Mouse solve these problems, or simply create new ones?

The splash site states that this mouse was over 2 years in the making. Hundreds of prototypes were created. Ultimately, the researchers settled on a capacitative-sensing model, which almost works like a touchscreen. The time was spent building a gesture recognition engine and refining the sensor design. The Touch Mouse features seven finger gestures, which will allow you to do the most common tasks in Windows 7, like opening files, moving between windows, and switching tasks. The mouse will also allow you to use your thumb in the gestures and will only work with Windows 7 when it's released in May for €70 (US$90). The mouse also uses BlueTrack technology, which functions on almost any surface.

Review of 2010
Once again we have a year gone by and ready to sum up. As usual it went by way to fast and the biggest reason one notice any changes is the progress the kids goes through over the year. We have had a very interesting year in many ways and luckily we all have been safe and sound all the time. It's now three years since we left Taiwan, three years was also the time we spent there. But it feels as if the time in Taiwan was much longer the three years back home, and that's the confirmation of how much we enjoyed being there. At the same time I don't regret coming back, home is always home.

This year was the first full year with William. Back in January he could crawl but that was about it. Now at the end of the year he walks, talks (a little bit) and runs as if he never did anything else. The last month he also became much more conscious and when you ask him questions you usually get a "yes" or "no" as reply. It's really nice to see him growing up like that and I can see the ending of the baby era we have had now for seven years. I like it very much with the kids growing up.

The last winter was a "classic" winter with lots of snow and very cold sometimes. All together we got 75 cm (30 inches) of snow and the coldest days the temperature went down to -22C (-8F). I enjoyed very much all the snow and coldness as that is something I really like. But it didn't look like that at first. Still halfway through December 2009 there was no snow at all but then we got a lot, and it took until early April before it was gone.

In February the bank I'm working in decided to outsource some of its IT staff to Fujitsu Services so I had to change my job. On the whole however there was no major changes for me since I continued to work for the bank although from inside another company. The bank is about to migrate from XP to Windows 7 and all my experience as a System builder is now very welcome in this big project. It will be implemented during 2011 and affects 23 000+ users so it's going to be very exciting.

In April both boys has their birthdays, Joakim went 4 and William is now 1 year old. Joakim is "only" 4 years old, it seems as if he has been along for a longer time. He had a party at home for some of his friends from the kindergarten. William we took to a restaurant and had the dinner out, that was also nice.

The summer was warm and nice. We went to Halland County for the Midsummer festival and in August we went for 3 weeks to Houson, Texas. This was the first trip with all 3 children and it was a great trip. For me it was the first time in 5 years to be back in Houston and I met some friends from the Compaq years. Also Fali has got friends in Houston and we really enjoyed the trip. During the summer William learns to walk he took full advantage of this during our vacation.

Back in Sweden it was time for Katharina to go to school, 1 grade. She's a big girl now, that's for sure. She has made good progress all autumn and can read fluently now - at least easy books. I must say I'm very happy and proud of that for her sake. One sad news we also got was the passing of my grandfather, aged 97. He celebrated his last birthday in July and we had a big party then knowing it might be near the end. Looking back I'm happy we did that since it came to be a nice memory to keep now when he's gone.

In October I went to Munich over a weekend and like Houston earlier it was reunion time with some old friends and colleagues from Compaq/HP. It was six year since my last visit but I know now I must go back again in less than six years. I always liked Munich a lot and had a lot of nice flashbacks during these days.

And halfway into November the winter hit us. I thought last winter was an exception but this year we got even more snow, and it's still at least 3 more months to go before spring. Currently we have more than one meter of snow (4 feet) and more to come. But at least we got a white winter for the second year running and the kids love it.

2011 will be very interesting and full of anniversaries. In February I will be 50 and later in the year Fali will be 40, and we will also celebrate 10 years together this year. But for now I want to wish you a Happy New Year 2011 and I hope your past year was as happy and interesting as our was. Take care and have a great life :)

Pac-Man firar 30-årsjubileum

Anniversary #2 - Hubble celebrates 20 years in space
On April 24, 1990, the space shuttle and crew of STS-31 were launched to deploy the Hubble Space Telescope into a low Earth orbit. What followed was one of the most remarkable sagas of the space age. Hubble discoveries revolutionized nearly all areas of current astronomical research, from planetary science to cosmology. And, its pictures were unmistakably out of this world.

This brand new Hubble photo is of a small portion of one of the largest seen star-birth regions in the galaxy, the Carina Nebula. The image captures the top of a three-light-year-tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being pushed apart from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks like arrows sailing through the air.

Anniversary #3 - Chernobyl - 24 years on
With radiation levels much higher than expected and cancer levels continuing to rise, the dangerous legacy of the Chernobyl disaster is still a hugely significant issue for Europe. New research issued by the American Geophysical Union indicates that it will take between 180 to 320 years for the Caesium 137 - a radioactive isotope - to disappear from the local environment, much longer than the 30 years that had been expected.

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred 24 years ago when a reactor exploded during a test of its emergency system, contaminating the then Soviet states of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus as well as creating a fallout which spread to other parts of Europe. As a result, thousands of children and adults are living with social, economic and medical deprivation to this day.
