Idag om knappt 3 timmar, kl 16.36 svensk tid, skjuts den sista rymdskytteln upp. Det är Atlantis som ger sig av på den sammanlagt 135 flighten med rymdfärjorna. Ursprungligen byggda för att klara 100 uppskjutningar var, visade det sig att detta inte bara vad den tekniskt mest avancerade maskin människa någonsin byggt, det var också en av de svåraste att hålla igång.

De vinster man räknade med att göra när man slapp bygga nya farkoster för varje uppskjutning försvann snart till stor del i underhåll och iordningställande för nästa fligth. När sedan både militären och näringslivet drog sig ur projektet efter challengerkatastrofen blev det ohållbart. Dödsstötet för rymdfärjan kom när NASA lade ut skötseln på entreprenad till Boing som i sin iver att tjäna penger på det hela minskade personalen från 30 000 till 15 000. Nästa katastrof med Columbia kom som ett brev på posten.

Det är sorligt att se att USA inte har något nytt kommersiellt rymdprogram i kölvattnet nu när Ares-projektet är skrotat utan måste förliga sig helt på utländska rymdprogram och privata alternativ som t ex SpaceX.

I skrivande stund är vädret ett litet frågetecken därborta i Floria men besättningen tar just nu de sista bilderna innan de går ombord och sedan bär det av. Den som vill följa uppskjutningen live kan göra det på NASA TV
